A Piece of the Action is a crime comedy that was written by Charles Blackwell, based upon Timothy March's story. Directed by Sidney Poitier, the film features Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby and James Earl Jones. The story follows Dave Anderson (played by Bill Cosby) and Manny Durrell (played by Sydney Poitier). They are two very successful, professional and high class thieves who have never been caught. However, Joshua Burke (played by James Earl Jones) has been gathering evidence on the two thieves for quite some time. Over the years, he has amassed enough evidence through his retirement to actually put them away. Instead of getting the men prosecuted, the detective elects not to. Rather, he decides to cash in on the situation - but not for money. For keeping silent, the crooks will have to commit the rest of their lives to going straight and then do community service at a youth center in the inner city, designed to help delinquents from all around the region. The thieves are at first very uninterested in the detective's offer. They realize that this will affect their fancy lifestyles and require them to spend their time in unsavory parts of town where they would rather not be. They fought their whole lives to keep from living in the ghetto and they are not about to go back willingly. A little time passes and the guys realize that if they don't take the detective's offer, where they spend their time outside is not going to matter, since they'll both be in prison. They elect to help the kids - which goes wrong at first. In time, the kids learn to admire and trust these two worldly men in spite of everything. Things go along well until a person from their past comes forward and demands that they complete another heist, lest they be exposed and prosecuted once more.
