In the thriller Bone Dry, written by Jeff O'Brien and directed by Brett A. Hart, traveling businessman Eddie stops in a Mojave desert town for a cup of coffee and flirts with a waitress who tells him that for the next 200 miles around the town there is nowhere to stop and a cellphone dead zone. She seems to be trying to convince Eddie to stay but he leaves anyway. After sleeping in his car, Eddie gets out to stretch his legs and finds a gun held to the back of his head. The mysterious assailant knocks Eddie unconscious after Eddie offers him his wallet and car. When he awakes Eddie is alone in the desert where he is nearly shot by a round from a rifle. He finds a compass and a walkie talkie, the latter of which tells him to start walking north towards Southern California or else he and his family will be killed. The person on the other end of the walkie talkie will not reveal why he is doing this and only tells Eddie that his name is Jimmy. Jimmy watches Eddie through a scope, following him in a truck and having conversations with him over the walkie talkie. As he makes the grueling walk through the desert, Eddie is tortured by Jimmy. He drinks drugged water left out for him and wakes naked and handcuffed to a cactus that he has to free himself from. The inhumane tortures that Jimmy puts him through only grow worse from there. Eddie must face several more mantraps and sadistic tests at the hands of Jimmy that push him to his limits as he tries to survive the walk through the desert and save his family. As his march continues he becomes desperate to know why this is happening to him but Jimmy refuses to reveal his reasons until Eddie has suffered enough.
