Border, a blockbuster Bollywood movie released in 1997, is a war film that closely follows the action of the Battle of Longewala. The battle was a part of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The actual Battle of Longewala was fought in Rajasthan (part of the Western Theatre of the war). During one night a single band of 150 Punjab soldiers under the command of Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri defended their post against an entire regiment of the Pakistani Army. The battle was a struggle and both sides lost several men. Assistance for the Punjab regiment finally came from the Indian Air Force by means of tanks, artillery, and air strikes the next morning. Border is an engaging thriller that combines edge-of-your-seat action with historical documentary. The movie is 178 minutes long and spoken in Hindi. It is directed and produced by J. P. Dutta, with music by Anu Malik. Border stars Indian actors Sunny Deol (as Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri), Sunil Shetty (as Captain Bhairon Singh, B.S.F.), Akshaye Khanna (as 2nd lt Dharamvir Singh), Jackie Shroff (as Wing Commander Andy Bajwa), and Puneet Issar (as Subedar Ratan Singh) and Sudesh Berry (as Subedar Mathura Das).
