Set in the late 1940s, Caravans is an epic adventure drama centering around the heroic efforts of a group of international diplomats stationed in the fictional Middle Eastern country of Zadestan. The story follows diplomat Mark Miller (Michael Sarrazin) who is assigned to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Ellen Jasper (Jennifer O'Neill), the wife of another diplomat.

Miller's search for Ellen leads him on a perilous journey across the desert to the remote village of Ghazareen, where he meets Zulffiqar (Anthony Quinn), a nomadic chieftain who offers to help him find Ellen. Zulffiqar is a larger-than-life character, proud of his heritage and fiercely loyal to his people. He has the respect of his followers and the fear of his enemies, including a ruthless warlord named Shaiek Kasim (Christopher Lee).

As Miller and Zulffiqar travel deeper into the desert, they encounter countless dangers, including sandstorms, bandits, and hostile tribes. They are joined by Ellen's brother, a boastful journalist named Mark's Aidan Jasper (Barry Morse) who is convinced that he can use the situation to boost his career. Together, the group fights to survive against all odds.

Throughout their journey, Miller learns to respect and appreciate Zulffiqar's way of life. He witnesses the nomadic traditions, the loyalty towards family and tribe and the bravery of the nomads who live and die for their way of life. Zulffiqar, on the other hand, learns the importance of sacrifice and duty when Miller is injured and he has to make a decision that will either benefit his people or help Miller.

The movie is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by James A. Michener. It captures the spirit of the author's work, and depicts the struggle between the western world and the conservative customs of the Middle East. Caravans was shot on location in Iran, providing a glimpse into the life of nomads and their way of living at that time. The landscapes are breathtaking, and the cinematography by Sven Nykvist is both visually stunning and plays an integral role in capturing the essence of the desert.

The performances of the main cast are remarkable. Anthony Quinn is outstanding as Zulffiqar; he brings a depth to his portrayal of a tribal leader: a man who knows his history, customs and the importance of loyalty. Michael Sarrazin, on the other hand, portrays Miller as a man who starts to understand and appreciate the culture of the people he is investigating. Christopher Lee brings a malevolent presence to Shaiek Kasim, a man who will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

Caravans is more than just an adventure movie. It encapsulates the essence of cultural differences, terrorism, duty and love. It shows how two sides can come together to try and understand each other even when they are different; how two worlds can converge and spark off each other. The ending may come as a surprise to many, the film provides a fitting conclusion to a story that has shown the importance of cultures, love and family.

In conclusion, Caravans is a classic that has stood the test of time. Director James Fargo has created a movie that is a hallmark of its era, capturing the spirit of the novel that inspired it, and as well involves many elements of society that we can relate to in our current time. It draws the viewer in from the start and leaves them wanting more. It is a must-watch for any fan of adventure, drama and for those interested in the history, cultures and customs of Middle Eastern society.
