Fearless is an adaptation of the life of Huo Yuanjia. The movie portrays Huo Yuanjia as a man that starts out trying to restore what he perceives as his family pride and ends up restoring the pride of a Nation through Wushu, a martial art. The story begins at the end of Huo’s life where he is in the middle of a four against one fight. He fights the first three opponents and before he engages his final opponent he indulges in a flashback of his life from childhood. Finally the movie returns to the beginning to show Huo’s final fight against Japanese martial artist Anno Tanaka. Huo’s journey is about a man that must learn the true meaning of Wushu the art that he has chosen to master and by doing so, discover the reason for his own life. As a young man he believes that power and respect are won through fighting and that this is the purpose of Wushu. His mother attempts to teach him otherwise but he does not listen. Instead, he chooses to continue picking fights to the exclusion of all else including his mother and daughter. As his victories increase so does his arrogance and pride. Finally in a fit of anger and a desire for revenge Huo does something that cannot be undone and he pays a heavy price for his pride and lack of control. It is here at this juncture that his journey takes an abrupt turn. Feeling the weight of his mistake Huo seeks escape. He soon learns that the only way to escape is to change the person that made the mistake. With his newfound inner strength he returns to his home to find that everything has changed. Outsiders have come to China and are slowly eroding the pride of its people by orchestrating fights in which they defeat and humiliate their Chinese opponents. Huo sees this as an opportunity to use what he has learned to help restore National pride to the Chinese people. Funded by his childhood friend, Huo travels to Shanghai to take on the outsiders that seek to belittle his home and his people. Huo Yuanjia is the founder of the Chin Woo Athletic Association in Shanghai. This movie is based on true events.
