Black Mask is a martial arts feature film starring Jet Li and Lau Ching Wan. Jet Li plays Simon, a seemingly humble library employee that has a secret past. Simon used to be a member of the 701 Squad, a force of highly trained and genetically-altered soldiers. The military abandoned the 701 soldiers, determining that the soldiers were going insane. When Simon learns from his trusted friend and police officer, Inspector "Rock" Shek Wai-Ho, that druglords are being murdered all over the city, Simon decides to suit up in a cape and black mask to do some crime fighting of his own. When one of Simon's colleagues from the library, Tracy Lee, gets caught in the middle of the fighting, the Black Mask also must protect her from becoming one of the many victims of the 701 Squad. Tracy, who is initially clueless as to the Black Mask's true identity, has romantic feelings for Simon, but is very afraid of the Black Mask. To keep her safe, the Black Mask decides to keep her hostage in his apartment. The villains of the 701 Squad are lead by the evil Commander Hung played by Patrick Lung. Alongside Hung in the 701 Squad, is Kaelin, Simon's insane former lover. The Black Mask must use every means at his disposal if he has any hope of defeating the super soldiers he used to lead. He battles his way up the ranks, facing increasing danger and tougher foes. The final epic fight scene features a showdown between the Black Mask and Commander Hung in a battle to the death. Black Mask features a high-volume of action sequences and violences. The fight choreographer is the famed Yuen Wo Ping, who has gone on to choreograph fight sequences for a number of blockbuster films. Black Mask marks the North American debuts for Jet Li and Yuen Wo Ping.
