Ginger Clown is a 2013 horror-comedy directed by Balázs Hatvani. The film stars Tim Curry as the Ringmaster, Lance Henriksen as Braineater and Michael Winslow as Stutters, alongside Ashley Lloyd and Erin Hayes. The movie takes place in a small town, where six college friends celebrate Halloween by attending a circus. The atmosphere is sketchy and sudden things seem to happen out of nowhere leading to a bizarre and terrifying experience for the friends.
The movie begins with six friends; Arthur, Sarah, Kingston, Zippo, Hannah, and Wren, at a Halloween party. Later, they decide to attend a nearby circus show specifically advertised for adults only. On their way to the circus, they get lost in the woods and come across a sign warning them not to go further. They ignore it and continue on their way to the circus.
Once they arrive at the circus, they notice there aren't many patrons, but decide to investigate anyways. They are greeted by the Ringmaster, who is played by Tim Curry. He explains to them that they are the only ones who have come to the show, and this is a special circus that is only seen by the purest of hearts. The Ringmaster tells the group that to be a part of the show they have to participate in three acts: the Circus of the Dead, the Circus of the Past and the Circus of the Future.
The group soon realizes this circus is not a normal one, as they learn that they are being tested on their morals, personality, and worthiness to enter into the mysterious circus. Little by little, each friend starts to reveal their personal stories that show their darkest sides. In a twisted, evil carnival world thatâs populated by an assortment of deranged clowns and other horrific characters, they must find a way out before itâs too late.
As the night goes on, the group begin to experience horrific and surreal events. The Ringmaster, along with his creepy clowns and staff, starts to test each one of them. The friends must confront their fears, insecurities and test their morality to survive the cruel journey. The clowns, who seem to be made out of clay, turn out to be the dead performers who'd partaken in a cursed opium, rendering them powerless to avoid re-animation.
The special effects are quite good in the film, especially the clay-clown makeup that gives the film an eerie look. Ginger Clown has a fun and engaging script with good performances from Curry and Henriksen. There are some impressive moments, particularly regarding the look of the clowns, and it is easy to get caught up in the bizarre world of fake carnival soundstages, creepy designed costumes, haunted clowns and supernatural madness.
Overall, Ginger Clown is an entertaining horror-comedy that offers a genuinely freaky atmosphere with good performances from the whole cast. The circus itself is such a foreboding location, and Balazs Hatvani takes full advantage of every single detail to make it as creepy and surreal as possible. Ginger Clown may not be for those particularly afraid of clowns, but if you're looking for a different type of horror movie, then this is certainly worth giving a chance.
In conclusion, Ginger Clown is a unique, horror comedy that is worth watching. The atmosphere is creepy, with well-designed settings and makeup, and the cast is fantastic. The film offers a surreal and bizarre experience in a psychedelic world and takes one to unexpected scares that break the monotony of many regular horror movies. Fans of the genre should definitely check this one out.
