Honeysuckle Rose is a 1980 drama-romantic comedy about a country and western singer trying to achieve fame. The movie is directed by Jerry Schatzberg and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Music and Best Song. Buck Bonham (Willie Nelson) is a grizzled, aging country singer and songwriter, who has garnered regional fame. Buck badly wants to breakthrough the threshold and find national success and will do anything to attain it. Buck's heavy touring schedule is growing tiresome to his wife Viv (Dyan Cannon) and son Jamie (Joey Floyd). In the middle of a tour, his good friend and band guitarist Garland Ramsey (Slim Pickens) has decided that he's hand enough and wants to retire. The news comes as a blow to Buck, as he has no replacement readily available. Garland suggests Buck hire his own daughter Lily (Amy Irving) take his place. She is a young but seasoned singer and guitarist who Garland believes will be a good temporary solution until he finds a permanent replacement. Buck soon realizes that its not always a good idea to put friendship ahead of business. Lily, who has had a crush on Buck since childhood joins the band and problems quickly follow. Lily is talented, beautiful, and her infatuation for Buck has only increased over time. Buck and Lily soon enter into a romantic affair, much to the chagrin of Garland and other friends. Buck's middle age crisis threatens to destroy his family and wreck his career and reputation. The chemistry and passion between Buck and Lily cannot be hidden. Viv is tipped off about the affair and shows up at one of the concerts. Needless to say, all hell breaks loose. Buck must decide if a fling with his best friend's daughter is more important than his family. After deciding to return to his wife, Buck wonders if Viv will have it in her heart to forgive and take him back.
