I Saw the Light

The brief life and career of legendary country-music star Hank Williams is the subject of this biopic. The title, which refers to a gospel song performed by Williams, chronicles his stormy early marriage to Audrey Williams, his rise to fame and his early death. The film stars British actor Tom Hiddleston as Hank Williams and Elizabeth Olsen as Audrey, his first wife. The movie follows the usual trajectory of hard times, success and decline due to alcohol and drug overuse. The singer's marriage to Audrey makes up much of the film's emotional core. As Williams's musical reputation continues to rise, Audrey, a singer and musician in her own right, wants more of a share in the limelight. The resulting personal and professional rivalry is chronicled through a series of flashbacks and staged interviews. The film's stars do all of their own singing and many of Williams's standards are performed by the principal actors including "Move It on Over" and "Jambalaya."
