Island of the Burning Damned is a science-fiction horror movie from 1967, directed by Terence Fisher and starring an incredible cast including Christopher Lee, Patrick Allen, Peter Cushing, and Jane Merrow. It follows a series of strange events that occur on a remote island off the coast of Britain, and the attempts of a small group of people to survive the terrifying onslaught.

The film begins with a series of strange meteor showers that fall across the British countryside, each containing small, jelly-like substances that begin to glow and give off intense heat. As the authorities begin to investigate, they discover that the meteors all fell in the same area - on a remote island off the coast of Ireland, where a nuclear research facility is located.

Fearing the worst, a team of experts, including scientist Jeff Callum (Patrick Allen) and intelligence agent Godfrey Hanson (Christopher Lee), are sent to the island to investigate. Upon arriving, they find that the local townspeople have all been acting strangely - freezing in place, being unable to speak, and suffering from memory loss.

As they begin to investigate, they discover that the jelly-like meteors have a terrifying effect on humans - causing them to burst into flames at random intervals. With the island cut off from the mainland and the facility's staff succumbing to the same strange effects, the team must race against time to find a way to destroy the meteorites and save themselves from burning alive.

The tension in the film builds slowly but steadily throughout, with a palpable sense of dread and unease permeating every scene. From the eerie, isolated atmosphere of the island to the increasingly bizarre behavior of the townspeople, the movie is a masterclass in creating an unsettling atmosphere.

The performances of the lead actors are superb, with Christopher Lee in particular lending his signature gravitas to the role of Godfrey Hanson. Patrick Allen is equally impressive as Callum, the stoic scientist who refuses to give up even as the situation becomes more and more dire. Peter Cushing (who only appears in a minor role) brings his usual blend of charm and intensity to the proceedings, elevating the film even further.

The special effects in the movie are somewhat dated by modern standards, but are still effective in their own right. The fiery deaths caused by the meteors still pack a punch, and the eerie, glowing effect of the meteorites themselves is suitably eerie.

Ultimately, Island of the Burning Damned is a classic example of 60s horror cinema - a tense, atmospheric thriller with an all-star cast and a truly frightening concept. While it may not be as well-known as some of the other horror movies from its era, it is definitely worth checking out for fans of classic sci-fi and horror alike.

Island Of The Burning Damned is a 1967 science fiction movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 34 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.6.
