Killer Joe is a dark comedy crime thriller starring Matthew McConaughey, Gina Gershon and Emile Hirsch, and directed by William Friedkin, the acclaimed director of The Exorcist and The French Connection. It concerns a young man, Chris (Hirsch) who hatches a murder-for-hire scheme in order to pay back a gambling debt. Upon learning from his mother's boyfriend that his mother has taken out a life insurance policy and named his sister, Dottie, as the sole beneficiary, Chris decides to find some way to kill her and collect the money, thinking Dottie will give him at least half. Since he can't figure a way to engineer a way to make her death seem accidental, he decides to turn to a contract killer he's heard of through the rumor mill, a police detective named "Killer" Joe Cooper (McConaughey). Killer Joe meets Chris and his father, Ansel, to hear them out but decides they aren't serious about the job since they can't afford to pay him a retainer. When Joe learns about Chris' beautiful younger sister, he convinces a reluctant Chris to offer Dottie as a retainer. Joe comes over to the house and enjoys dinner and a romantic evening with Dottie, who is equally pleased with the arrangement. As Joe grows closer to the family, and especially to Dottie, he becomes increasingly annoyed at Chris' inability to produce the insurance money, due to the fact that his mother's boyfriend has lied about who the beneficiary of the insurance money is. Disbelieving that Chris could be that stupid, Joe investigates further, determined to get his share. This leads to a stunning revelation and a jaw-dropping conclusion that's equal parts hilarious and horrifying, earning it the only NC-17 rating of any film made in the US in 2012.
