Into the Wild

Into The Wild is the incredible true story of Chris McCandless, a recent college graduate who threw away all of his possessions and abandoned his life and family to travel across the country searching for adventures. McCandless hitchhiked and lived off the land with the ultimate goal of going off to live in the Alaskan wilderness to truly test himself. The story of McCandless's trip that ended tragically with his death in Alaska was first brought to the public's attention in a book of the same name by Jon Krakour. Film director Sean Penn waited ten years to make this movie, waiting for permission from the McCandless family to put Chris' story on the big screen. The result has been the telling of an incredible story by Penn with actor Emile Hirsch playing the lead role of Chris McCandless, in a movie that brings out strong reactions from every viewer who watches it. While the story is best known for Chris McCandless' trip and ultimate death in Alaska, so little is known about his time there because his journal from that time lists little else aside from the game that he killed and the food that he ate while in Alaska. Instead, the movie focuses primarily on his journey in getting to Alaska. The film starts his decision to leave after his college graduation, his fights and at times contemptuous relationship with his parents, and his close bond with his sister, played in the movie by Jena Malone, who also narrates the film. The movie follows McCandless as he has unique and impromptu adventures all throughout the American west, meeting like minded souls along the way, but always leaving on his way before bonding too closely with anyone. His adventure is one that he takes alone and ultimately takes him to Alaska, where he is defeated by the harsh and unforgiving wilderness that lives far away from civilization. The story of Into The Wild is unlike any other that has been told in books or cinema before and Penn directs an intriguing depiction of a young person who lived his life outside the box and who wasn't afraid to be different. The story of McCandless is the story of a person who was both bold and brave, but at the same time greatly flawed. It's the story of a person who went in search of himself after an upbringing full of struggles and hardships. It's a story similar to most viewers, but which is dealt with in a most unconventional way. If the story isn't enough, Penn compliments it with spectacular scenery and a gripping soundtrack by Eddie Veder, which helps make Into the Wild a complete movie.
