Death has been a fascination for Sandra Larson (Molly Parker) ever since she was a child. She is staring at a dead man's body when the movie starts. As a teenager she remembers the feelings she would get when she smelled anything that had died. She would dance around practically naked, and rub the remains of the dead animals on her body. Carol (Jessie Winter Mudie) was Sandra's only friend growing up. They shared the same feelings about death. Carol thought the dancing around was a bit much, and it ends their friendship. Later in college, biology is Sandra's favorite subject, and she loves to dissect the animals without ruining their bodies. Sandra gets a job in a funeral home as a chauffeur. One day she takes a trip through a car wash so that she can look at the body in the casket. She thinks that she sees a light shining from the body. Sandra wants to believe that the soul is still trapped in the body somehow. In college Sandra takes a class on embalming. The mortician of the funeral home allows her to become his apprentice. In the biology class she meets Matt (Peter Outerbridge). He becomes fascinated by Sandra's interest in death. She would spend the evenings with Matt, but she would always leave for late night visits to the mortuary. There she did the dance with the dead bodies like she did as a child. She takes the visits to the extreme as she partakes of more than the dance with the bodies. Matt finds out about her obsession, and is hurt. When he tries to get her to discuss her strange habits she becomes very upset. Matt shows up at the funeral home in an attempt to save their relationship. He then goes to the extent of lying on a mortuary table to win her heart.
