Kung Fu Hustle is a Hong Kong production combining comedy with action. The movie was produced, written, and starring Stephen Chow. Set during the 1930s in Shanghai, the plot begins with the gripping turmoil of different gangs in quest for power. After settling a dispute at the police station, one gang is about to leave the premises when the Axe gang, the most notorious gang in Shanghai, marches in full force with each member holding an axe to represent their organization. Cornered and outnumbered, the gang loses with everyone shot to death. Without any laws enforced and no police to defy the ongoing gang wars, residents are only allowed to live in peace within squatter areas that do not strike appealing to gangs. Such example is the town of Pig Sty Alley, a huge apartment complex that plays home to people of different professions and owned and managed by a lewd landlord and his forceful wife. The town was living peacefully until one day, two bandits named Sing and Bone come to Pig Sty Alley impersonating Axe gang members in order to get a free haircut and, ultimately, the respect of the residents. The landlord's wife overhears the commotion and rushes to see what's going on. When she hears that Sing and Bone are threatening their tenants as Axe gang members, she starts slapping Sing with her slippers. Fleeing in despair, Sing decides to light a firecracker and throws it outside only to land on one of the heads of a real Axe gang member. Sing quickly accuses the residents of Pig Sty Alley. Believing the accusation, the Axe gang members attack the residents. Yet before one of the members can strike, the screen goes black and sounds of lighting fast movement can be heard. When the screen comes back, the gang member is found lying half past dead in a basket. With one of their members dead, Brother Sum, the leader of the Axe gang, vengefully unleashes their army to attack Pig Sty Alley and kill all who live in it. They are stopped by three tenants who look normal yet are actually Kung Fu masters of different specializations and techniques. Being humiliated, the Axe gang retreats and plots to loosen the best Kung Fu masters to go after their enemies. Sing and Bone are caught in the turmoil and are tested to see where their allegiance lies. In the end, Sing discovers his true potential and battles the world's deadliest Kung Fu master.
