La Truite (The Trout) is a French drama film directed by Joseph Losey and released in 1982. The movie stars Isabelle Huppert, Jacques Spiesser, and Jeanne Moreau in the lead roles. The film tells the story of Frederique (Isabelle Huppert), a successful businesswoman who has built her fortune in the world of commercial fishing. Despite her immense wealth, Frederique is discontented with her life and sets out to find happiness by exploring her sexuality and embarking upon a series of affairs with both men and women.

Ambitious and calculating, Frederique spares no effort to achieve her goals. She persuades one of her employees, Simon (Jacques Spiesser), to marry her, even though she is not in love with him, as she believes his social status will benefit her business ventures. Simon agrees, but soon realizes that he is merely a pawn in Frederique's game.

As Frederique continues to indulge in her sexual exploits, she finds herself drawn to a young woman named Maud (Isabelle Weingarten), who is something of a bohemian and has no qualms about living an alternative lifestyle. The two women become lovers, and Frederique is finally able to give herself over entirely to her own desires.

However, when Maud is killed in a tragic accident, Frederique finds herself alone once again and begins to question the value of her previous endeavors. She is approached by a journalist named Rambert (Daniel Olbrychski), who offers her a chance to speak out against the fishing industry and the environmental destruction it has wrought. Though initially reluctant, Frederique eventually agrees to assist Rambert, as she realizes that there may be more to life than just her own wants and desires.

The movie is a character study of Frederique, a complex and enigmatic woman who is both admirable and detestable in equal measure. Huppert delivers a superb performance, capturing the conflicting emotions and motivations that drive Frederique's actions. The supporting cast is equally strong, with Spiesser and Moreau providing excellent counterpoints to Huppert's leading role.

The film's visual style is also noteworthy, featuring a variety of camera techniques and shots that reflect Frederique's changing emotions and perspectives. The cinematography is particularly impressive, capturing the breathtaking natural beauty of the French countryside as well as the gritty realities of urban life.

Overall, La Truite is a powerful and thought-provoking movie that explores themes of love, sexuality, ambition, and responsibility. It is a testament to Joseph Losey's directorial talent and Isabelle Huppert's acting prowess, and continues to be a relevant and compelling work of cinema today.
