Matchstick Men is about Roy, a conman. Roy has a fear of open spaces, crowds and germs, obsessive-compulsive disorder and tics. He feels he is losing his touch as a criminal mastermind. After a violent panic attack, his partner, Frank, suggests that Roy see a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist prescribes him medication, takes him through therapy and contacts his ex-wife who was pregnant during their divorce. The psychiatrist informs him that she gave birth to a girl, Angela, who is now fourteen years old. Roy agrees to meet her and Angela’s youthful energy is so infectious that he decides to embark on another con. The target is a businessman named Chuck. Angela surprises Roy by appearing on his doorstep, wanting to stay with him after getting in an argument with her mother. They share some father-and-daughter bonding time. He soon reveals his true occupation. Angela is fascinated and insists that Roy show her a con. Roy confesses to his psychiatrist that he feels guilty, but he agrees to let her assist during Chuck's con. It does not go as expected when Chuck figures out what Roy, Frank and Angela are up to and chases them. Furious with Angela for messing up, and failing to reveal her arrest record, he forbids her from calling him. He subsequently learns that the medication is a placebo and that he doesn’t need it to be happy. He believes all he needs to be happy is Angela, so he lets her back into his life. After they reunite, Chuck confronts them and Angela shoots him. Roy sends Angela into hiding with Frank, and the psychiatrist obtains his bank account password so he can give Roy's money to Angela. Unbeknownst to him, his partner has been running a con on him. His daughter Angela, the businessman Chuck, and the psychiatrist are all part of a long con designed to get Roy's money.
