"The biggest risk in life is not taking one."

Proof is a movie that depicts the struggling relationship between a father and his daughter as well as the daughter's struggle to be more self-assured and confident. Robert, played by Anthony Hopkins, is the father of Catherine, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, who was once a brilliant mathematician. In his time as a professor he wrote many groundbreaking proofs in the field of mathematics. As the story unfolds, Catherine lives with her father who's mental faculties are deteriorating.

The struggle between father and daughter centers around Robert's deteriorating condition and his unfailing desire to create one more groundbreaking proof. Roberts spends all of his days scribbling in notebooks which end up containing pages of sentences which make no sense. Catherine is devoted to her father and tries to support him in his effort while also creating notebooks of her own. It turns out Catherine has inherited her father's mathematical genius and works on solving difficult equations herself.

The bulk of the story centers around the interactions Catherine has with Robert, who has actually passed away. With Robert's passing, the university sends a young man, played by Jake Gyllenhaal to go through all of the notebooks left behind by Robert to see if there is anything of significance in them. As he spends days in the house with Catherine, she begins to develop a closeness to him she does not have with other people.

Eventually, Hal, the young man sent by the university, comes across a notebook containing an amazing mathematical proof, which he instantly believes to have been created by Robert. Catherine's sister also makes an appearance after the funeral to help with the closing of the house. She also believes the proof to have been created by her father. The struggle between the characters comes into play when Catherine announces it was she who created the proof they have uncovered. She feels betrayed by Hal, who tries to discover the truth behind who actually created it. The character of Catherine is struggling with the relationships she has with Hal and her sister, but she also continues to struggle with the relationship she had with her mentally ill father. Ultimately, viewers are left wondering whether she wrote the final proof or whether she is exhibiting symptoms of mental illness similar to her father's.
