Roadracers is a fifties-era film where the protagonist, Dude, is a guitar-playing, rock-and-roll enthusiast who spends his free time hanging out in the small town he has lived in all his life alongside his Mexican girlfriend, Donna and best friend, Nixer. The movie opens with Dude meeting up with his girlfriend at a local rock concert. Then, the pair leave so Dude can get his girlfriend back home in time when they are confronted by another kid named Teddy Leather, who is the son of the town’s local police chief named Sarge, who has had multiple run-ins with Dude in the past. After Teddy Leather and his friends make racial epithets directed towards Donna, he challenges Dude to a street race. Before the race starts, Dude tosses the cigarette he is smoking out of his car, which lands in the hair of Teddy’s girlfriend, Julie, who is sitting in the backseat. Subsequently, his girlfriend’s hair is burned to the scalp and Teddy swears that he will get Dude back for what he did to her. Later, Dude is headed over to pick up his girlfriend again when he is pulled over by Sarge and then physically harassed by the police chief. Then, when he sees Teddy Leather at the local diner, Teddy and his cronies hit him in the head with a bottle. Dude's dreams of one day making it in the rock-and-roll industry and getting him and his girlfriend as far away from their small town surroundings as possible are answered when he discovers that one of the local rock-and-roll bands has just signed a deal with a record label and is in the process of looking for a new guitarist to join their group. Donna encourages Dude to go to the audition so that they can finally get away from their environment, but Dude opts not to go, worried that the group will water down his love for the music. However, Dude decides to take up the audition, but becomes irate when he discovers that the group he would be trying out for has completely changed their sound in order to appeal to a wider audience for financial success. Towards the end of the film, Dude finds himself face-to-face with Teddy yet again, in which the two engage in a final fight to the death.
