In this drama, a young woman and her son have to cope with the trauma of being imprisoned by a deranged man. Having been born in isolated captivity, the boy is in for a gigantic shock when he finally meets the outside world, and his mother has plenty of difficulties of her own. We first meet Joy and Jack as they're being held captive in a single small room inside a shed. They have built up coping mechanisms to help them endure their squalid living conditions and the assaults of the man who has imprisoned them. They are surviving in the room, just barely. When the opportunity to get free presents itself, they take it. They find, however, the life in the outside world is complicated in its own way. Learning to survive when they're free will require some coping mechanisms of its own. The film was based on a novel by Emma Donoghue. Brie Larson won the Best Actress Oscar at the 2016 Academy Awards for her role in the film.
