Somewhere in Time (1980) crosses the genres of romance and science-fiction which was not a common cross genre approach. The film was based on a novel entitled Bid Time Return by Richard Matheson, a prolific science-fiction and horror writer that wrote many of the episodes of The Twilight Zone television series. The film starred Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve. Reeve was coming off the huge success of the Superman films and this was an anticipated release for him. The plot of the film revolves around a playwright played by Reeve that falls in love with a woman in a portrait played by Jane Seymour. The woman in the portrait, however, lived nearly 75 years ago. In order to meet his true love, Reeve undergoes complex self-hypnosis to travel back in time to be with her. Things do not go as well as Reeve hopes. The woman in a popular actress and her manager seriously fears that a romance with Reeve could ruin her career. Therefore, the manager assumes the role of an obstacle trying to prevent the two from falling in love. Somewhere in Time was not a success when originally released but it has become a popular cult film in the ensuing decades. The film would gain the bulk of its audience thanks to its repeated cable television showings. There are a few reasons why the film is believed to have been a failure. Reeve was somewhat typecast in the role of Superman and fans did not want to see him in such a film. The studio also did not like the film very much and failed to promote it. Critics did not give it many great reviews. All of these factors led to Somewhere in Time becoming one of the biggest disappointments of 1980. The film now has a much wider audience of fans and continues to air on television throughout the world.
