Southie is an American drama and urban crime film that was written by Jimmy Cummings, Dave McLaughlin and John Shea, who also directed. The movie features actors Donnie Wahlberg, Rose McGowan, Will Arnett, Anne Meara, Lawrence Tierney, Amanda Peet and Robert Wahlberg. The story follows Danny Quinn (played by Donnie Wahlberg) who has returned home to the South Boston area from New York City. He gets stuck in between friends who are part of an Irish gang and his family, who are part of another gang. Danny is a prodigal son who has made it back to New York just before his luck and money began to run out. Danny's chain smoking, stress prone mother (played by Anne Meara) is none too pleased to be dealing with Danny and the whole gang situation. The siblings are played by Rose McGowan, real life brother Robert Wahlberg and Steve Koslowski. Danny has a good and supportive relationship with his understanding cousin called Peter Binda (played by John Shea). He happens to be a local cop who is torn between helping his cousin and doing what is required of him as a police officer. Danny's sister has always struggled with alcoholism. However, Danny buys her a six pack of beer while she is on the way to a detox facility. Meanwhile, their mother has continual heart attacks each time that a stressful situation ensues, which is quite often. Danny and friends open a casino, aided by a member of the local Irish Mafia. This severely hampers their ability to turn a profit since they must fork over so much money to the mob for the loan. The rest of his family is beholden to the other local gang in power, run by Colie Powers (played by Lawrence Tierney). Additionally, the local union is corrupt which only serves to complicate things for the gangs further. Danny continues to struggle with his mafia connections trying to resolve the conflicts.
