Stanley Jobson (Hugh Jackman), convicted of computer crimes against the FBI, is paroled after spending two years behind bars. Because of his conviction, he is forbidden to have any contact with computers. All Stanley wants to do is settle down and reconnect with his estranged family. Stanley’s reputation precedes him and is approached by a mysterious criminal named Gabriel (John Travolta). After some persuasion from a woman named Ginger (Halle Berry) and $100,000 as an incentive, Stanley agrees to fly to California to meet with Gabriel. Gabriel offers Stanley 10 million dollars to hack an illegal government bank account containing 9.5 billion dollars. What started out as a seemingly simple bank heist soon turns into an all-out war. Gabriel is not who he seems to be and has other plans for Stanley. Stanley is soon sucked into the underbelly of a seemingly corrupt government conspiracy. The thieves are doggedly hunted by an FBI agent (Don Cheadle), determined to bring Gabriel and his henchmen down. A corrupt US senator (Sam Shepherd), fearing that he will be exposed, declares war on Gabriel, and the heist explodes into a vicious game of cat and mouse, with Stanley in the middle.
