He led German and Italian forces in Northern Africa. He gained a reputation for skill and prowess in desert warfare and earned the sobriquet the "Desert Fox." He disagreed with Hitler on both military strategy and "the Final Solution," which eventually earned him the Fuhrer's wrath, despite his effectiveness in war.
