The Maker is a crime thriller movie released in 1997. It stars Matthew Modine as Joshua, a convicted murderer who is serving a life sentence. Mary-Louise Parker plays his wife, Bella, who is determined to prove his innocence. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is François, a young man who befriends Joshua in prison and helps him plan his escape.

The film takes place in the late 1980s, in New York City. Joshua has been behind bars for several years, but he has never given up hope of clearing his name. Bella visits him regularly, bringing him books and legal papers, and discussing their plans for the future. She is a strong-willed and intelligent woman who believes in her husband's innocence, even though the evidence seems to be against him.

François is a French immigrant who is new to the prison system. He is a petty criminal who was caught stealing, but he quickly realizes that he is in over his head. He meets Joshua in the prison yard and they strike up a friendship. François is fascinated by Joshua's conviction that he was framed for the murder he was convicted of, and he agrees to help him escape.

The plan is risky and complicated. Joshua will need a fake ID, a car, and a place to go. He enlists the help of one of his former partners in crime, an old man named Mickey, played by the veteran actor, Michael Madsen. Mickey is reluctant at first, but he eventually agrees to help Joshua, out of a sense of loyalty.

Meanwhile, Bella is working tirelessly to find new evidence that will exonerate her husband. She visits crime scenes, interviews witnesses, and talks to lawyers. She is convinced that there is something the police missed, and she will not stop until she finds it.

The Maker is a slow-burning thriller, with a lot of tension and suspense. The escape plan is meticulously executed, but the characters never lose sight of the dangers they are facing. Even after they are out of prison, they are constantly on the lookout for the police, and for other criminals who might want to harm them.

The acting is superb, particularly the performances of Modine and Parker. They have a natural chemistry that makes their relationship believable and engaging. Modine is particularly impressive as the protagonist, conveying a sense of intelligence and determination that is essential to the character.

Meyers is also strong in his role as François. He brings a youthful energy to the film, and his character's naivety is both endearing and dangerous. Madsen, as always, is excellent in his supporting role, adding gravitas and depth to the story.

The Maker is not a perfect film, however. The pace is slow at times, and some of the plot twists are predictable. The ending, while satisfying, is also a bit too neat and tidy. Overall, though, it is a well-crafted and engaging thriller, with strong performances and a solid story. It is definitely worth a watch, particularly for fans of the genre.

The Maker is a 1997 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 39 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.5.
