Released in 1989, The Package is a conspiracy-based international thriller starring Gene Hackman. Hackman plays Johnny Gallagher, a Green Beret put in charge of transporting a prisoner, Boyette (Tommy Lee Jones), from Germany. Boyette escapes in an airport restroom, and Gallagher begins his pursuit of the escapee. In order to track down Boyette, Gallagher employs the help of many friends and his ex-wife Eileen (Joanna Cassidy)for help. In his pursuit and investigation, Gallagher realizes that Boyette is part of a military conspiracy involving both German and American sides. The plot involves killing a high-ranking official in order to influence arms control talks.

As the conspiracy deepens, Gallagher becomes caught up in an international incident. Now, Gallagher must not only try and find Boyette and straighten out the situation, he must also stop an assassination in order to keep arms control talks and the world safe from certain destruction and war.
