The Poseidon Adventure is a thrilling disaster film from 1972 that follows the harrowing story of a group of passengers aboard the S.S. Poseidon, a luxury liner that is capsized by a massive wave on New Year's Eve. Directed by Ronald Neame, the film stars an ensemble cast that includes Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelley Winters, and Red Buttons.

As the ship flips over, a small group of survivors are left to navigate their way through the upside-down vessel, navigating a series of challenges and life-threatening obstacles in their quest for survival. The cast of characters is diverse, ranging from a minister and his wife to a sailor and a former prostitute.

Gene Hackman plays Reverend Frank Scott, a man of the cloth who finds himself reluctantly leading the group of survivors. Scott is a man who has lost his faith and his sense of purpose in life and is struggling to find his way back to God. He becomes the de facto leader of the group, using his wit and intelligence to guide his fellow passengers.

Ernest Borgnine plays a retired New York plumber, named Mike Rogo. Strong-willed and stubborn, Rogo is initially at odds with Scott but eventually comes to respect him and even relies on him for guidance. Shelley Winters plays Mrs. Belle Rosen, an overweight former swimming champion who is traveling with her husband to Israel. Rosen is one of the most memorable characters in the film, delivering a stunning performance as a woman determined to survive against all odds.

As the group makes their way through the ship, they encounter a number of obstacles, including flooding, fire, and treacherous passageways. The special effects used to create the destroyed liner are impressive, and the tension is palpable as the survivors struggle to stay alive.

One of the most memorable scenes in the film involves Winters' character, Mrs. Rosen, who becomes trapped underwater in the ship's dining room. She delivers an emotionally charged performance as she struggles to reach a nearby steam valve that will allow her and the others to escape.

The film is not without its flaws, however. Some of the secondary characters are not as well developed as they could be, and the dialogue can be a bit cheesy at times. However, these flaws are easily overshadowed by the film's overall impact.

Overall, The Poseidon Adventure is a thrilling disaster film that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The performances are excellent, and the special effects are impressive given the era in which the film was made. It is a classic example of the genre and is a must-see for fans of disaster films.
