Francis arrives at the isolated and crumbling castle of his brother-in-law Nicholas after his sister Elizabeth dies from an undisclosed blood disorder. Not believing the story of his sister's death and after being haunted by mysterious ghostly apparitions, Francis discovers that Elizabeth was driven to obsession about the torture devices found in the castle's chambers. Francis must find out the truth and not be driven mad himself in the heavy atmosphere.
