1984's The Pope of Greenwich Village stars Mickey Rourke and Eric Roberts as a pair of cousins who find themselves in a desperate situation in the Italian section of New York's Greenwich Village neighborhood. Charlie (Rourke) is a maître'd with dreams of owning his own restaurant one day. Paulie (Roberts) is his less than scrupulous cousin who supplements his income by skimming off of the guest checks at the restaurant where they both work. When Paulie is caught, he and Charlie are both fired.

Paulie, whose car has recently been impounded, and Charlie, whose girlfriend (Daryl Hannah) is pregnant, find themselves facing a serious financial dilemma. Paulie approaches Charlie with what he believes is a solution to their problems. His so-called solution involves the purchase of a "sure thing" of a racehorse for $150 thousand. He plans to finance the purchase through the services of a mafia-backed loan shark, who he plans to repay with the proceeds of a half-baked safecracking scheme. Unbeknownst to him, the safe in question belongs to local mafia don Bedbug Eddie Grant (Burt Young). Charlie reluctantly agrees to participate and misadventures ensue, leading to an original combination of comedy, crime drama and character study.
