The Way is about an American eye doctor named Thomas Avery. Thomas finds out that his son Daniel has passed away in France. Daniel was on a Catholic pilgrimage to follow the Way of St. James. Thomas has to fly to France to retrieve his son's body. When Thomas arrives in France, he is overcome with emotion and makes the decision to finish the journey his son started. He begins to walk the ancient spiritual trail when he meets Joost. Joost is from Amsterdam and has decided to take the same walk to lose weight before his brother's wedding. Joost is a heavy man who feels that he needs to drastically alter the course of his life before it is too late.

The two continue on the journey when they meet Sarah, who has decided to take the pilgrimage in an effort to quit smoking. Sarah has also been in an abusive relationship in her native Canada and sees the walk as a way to get her life back on track.

The group turns into a foursome when Jack joins the trio. Jack currently writes travel novels but has dreams of writing a classic novel like his idols. However, Jack says he has never found the motivation and hopes to overcome his fears by going on this spiritual journey.

Though these four people are from different backgrounds from different parts of the world, they all share a common desire -- to change the current course of their lives. They find solace in each other and offer comfort in times of sorrow. The group meets other travelers along the way that help them understand the importance of their journey.
