Wife and mother, Margaret Reynolds, slips into a strange fantasy world to get away from the reality of New York. Feeling ignored by her husband, she is gradually overcome by depression. Her husband, a Columbia University professor, is busy with his work and cocktail parties. She has wild fantasies that include her mother raiding the apartment with guerrilla soldiers. When her mother bothers her about learning to play cards and moving to the suburbs, Margaret slips into her fantasy world. She fantasizes about vacationing in Africa. She meets a tribe where women fight with spears, and the men clean dishes.
