This dramatic film examines the unfulfilled life of James Francis Coffey, an Irishman nicknamed Ginger because of his hair color. Coffey just never seems to find a job he really enjoys, even after moving to Montreal with his wife, Vera, and daughter Paulie after his military discharge. His wife soon leaves him for the man who gets him a job as a newspaper proofreader. But Ginger becomes obsessed with winning his wife back and is determined to do anything, even remain in a job he dislikes, in order to prove he can provide for his family.
