Ep 3. Darkness and Light

Set in the 1950s, A Place to Call Home is a critically acclaimed Australian television drama series that follows the captivating lives of the wealthy Bligh family and their servants as they navigate through love, family secrets, and societal expectations in their chase for happiness and acceptance.

In season 6 episode 3 titled "Darkness and Light," we see the residents of Inverness come together to celebrate the wedding of their dear friend Sarah Adams and wealthy businessman George Bligh. Despite the joyous occasion, tension lingers in the air as tensions run high between Sarah and George's mother, Elizabeth Bligh, who is still reeling from the loss of her son, James, while George is still trying to get over his infidelity.

As the night progresses, strange occurrences take place - a sudden blackout leaves the guests in complete darkness. In the chaos, a young Jewish man is arrested and viciously beaten by the local police, causing outrage amongst the guests who demand justice. This dark moment exposes the town's underbelly and prejudices, while highlighting Inverness' divisions between the young and the old, the haves and the have-nots, and the Jewish and non-Jewish residents.

Meanwhile, the arrival of newcomers in town, a single mother and her son, raises eyebrows and speculation, particularly amongst the gossipy townsfolk. As Sarah tries to befriend the shy boy and his mother, Elizabeth begins to dig into their past, unearthing secrets and motives that could jeopardize their standing in the community.

The darkness that engulfs the wedding reception doesn't just refer to the literal power outage - it serves as a metaphor for the town's shadowy underbelly, where discrimination, secrets, and hidden agendas lurk in the shadows. However, the light that shines on the Blighs' home carpet strengthens the bonds between the different factions of the town, and gives hope that they can overcome their differences and prejudices.
