Almost Royal Season 1 Episode 1 Los Angeles

Almost Royal is a mockumentary-style comedy that follows two British aristocrats, siblings Georgie and Poppy Carlton, as they journey around the United States, delving into the culture and customs of the American people. In season 1 episode 1, titled Los Angeles, Georgie and Poppy arrive in the esteemed city of LA to explore the fame and glamour that the city boasts. As they enter a world different from their own, they discover things like yoga, acting and improv classes which they take part in, in order to fully experience the Los Angeles lifestyle.

The episode opens with the duo arriving in Los Angeles, documenting the luxury of their first-class flight and casually name-dropping some of their celebrity acquaintances. As they step off the plane, they immediately begin to take in the sights and sounds of LA, even running into a slightly intimidating paparazzi photographer. They explore the Hollywood Walk of Fame, marvel at the stars of some famous people, and when they are surprised to see a star dedicated to their great-grandfather, they are quick to take a picture.

Next, the siblings head to a yoga class, and viewers are treated to some humor as they struggle to keep up with the yoga instructor’s moves. The instructor, amused by their cluelessness, offers some one-on-one training which Georgie and Poppy inevitably take quite seriously, as they aim to master the art of yoga and make the most of their time in LA.

They also visit an acting class, where they are faced with more confusion and surprise at the idea of acting being taught as a subject. Georgie and Poppy, of course, take part in the class, giving their best attempts at acting out a scene. It's obvious that they're not naturals, but they commit wholeheartedly to the task at hand and give it their all throughout the class, much to the surprise of their fellow students.

The duo also visits a bar and participates in an improv class, where they have to get up and enact different scenes with people they don’t know. Despite the awkwardness they initially feel, the siblings embrace the class and seem to enjoy themselves. The episode captures their willingness to engage with new people and experiences that are outside their comfort zone, even if they don’t truly understand the subject matter.

The episode continues with Georgie and Poppy being invited to a party hosted by some of their friends, but as they soon realize that their invite was due to a mix-up, they quickly exit the party. Even in their discomfort, they maintain their composure and heads held high, true to their aristocratic roots, but still keeping their humour and wit at hand.

Throughout the episode, the duo’s interactions with locals at every point are captured with a clever, comedic touch, making for a fun and entertaining watch. They remain polite, but often self-centered in their behaviour, which in their unique ways, makes them relatable and fun to watch.

The first episode sets the tone for a fun and exciting series, with Georgie and Poppy exploring different cities in the US. They bring a unique perspective to American culture, which highlights the differences between the British and American culture, with stylish sophistication and humour. The show is both an excellent satire on royalty and upper-classness in general, while also being a fun adventure that everyone can enjoy.
