- December 12, 2005
Animal Cops: Detroit is an American television series that premiered on March 30, 2002, on Animal Planet. The series follows the Michigan Humane Society's animal cruelty investigations and animal rescues.
Season 3 episode 12 of Animal Cops: Detroit is titled Piglet's Got to Go. The episode starts with an emergency call from a concerned neighbor reporting a pig in their residential neighborhood. As the Animal Cops team arrives to the scene, they are surprised by a brown-haired piglet that appears to be abandoned.
The team quickly identifies the problem as an owner who illegally kept the pig as a pet. Although the owner means well, owning a pig in a city is illegal and endangers the animal's life. After several attempts to persuade the owner to give up the pig willingly, the team is forced to obtain a warrant to retrieve the animal.
On scene, Animal Cops discovers roach-infested, unsanitary living conditions for the pig. As they take the pig, they come across mice, rats, and cockroaches living in the same room. The team is appalled and immediately contacts the health department to address the issue.
The pig, which had never been outside, is transferred to one of the Michigan Humane Society's animal rehabilitation centers, where it undergoes intensive medical and behavioral training. The center's staff works tirelessly to help the pig adapt to a life outside of the previous neglectful environment.
Alongside the pig's rescue story, Animal Cops: Detroit captures several other animal rescue operations by the Michigan Humane Society. The team saves a dog from a flooded basement, rescues a cat stuck in a chimney, and saves a snake tangled up in a fence. In addition, the episode showcases the awkward meeting between a ferret and a canine on adoption day.
Animal Cops: Detroit's third season episode 12, Piglet's Got to Go, raises awareness of the illegal ownership of exotic or wild animals. The episode shows the consequences of keeping an animal like a pig in urban settings and encourages people to be responsible pet owners. Animal Cops: Detroit captures the daily work of animal protection officers as they rescue, restore and re-home animals in need. It provides an inside look at the dangerous and heroic work of the Animal Cops and their mission to protect animals.
