Animal Precinct Season 1 Episode 11 Heat

  • December 4, 2001

Animal Precinct is a documentary-style reality show that follows the work of law enforcement agents from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) as they investigate cases of animal abuse and neglect in New York. In season 1, episode 11, titled "Heat," viewers are taken on a ride-along with the ASPCA officers during one of the hottest days of the year.

As the episode begins, we see the animal control unit of the ASPCA receiving a distress call about a dog left in a car in the sweltering heat. The caller reports seeing a large dog in distress in a minivan at a mall parking lot. The temperature outside is well into the 90s and the inside of the car, which has been left in direct sunlight, is even hotter.

The animal control officers quickly respond to the call, using their specialized tools to open the car's door without causing any damage. The dog, a Labrador retriever, is lying panting heavily on the backseat, and looks severely dehydrated. The officers immediately get to work, taking the dog out of the car and giving him water and electrolytes.

They also check the dog's vital signs and try to cool him down using ice packs and a fan. The dog is clearly suffering and in need of immediate medical attention.

Meanwhile, the officers try to track down the owner of the vehicle. They find the owner's phone number on a note left on the dashboard, and call her to inform her about the situation. The owner explains that she had only left the dog in the car for a few minutes while she ran some errands and didn't realize how hot it was outside.

The officer who is speaking to the owner tries to remain calm but becomes increasingly frustrated with her excuses. "Ma'am, it's 95 degrees outside, you should not be leaving your dog in the car," he says firmly.

The owner responds with surprise and guilt, realizing the gravity of the situation. She apologizes and agrees to come to the mall immediately to pick up her dog. When she arrives, she is met by the ASPCA officers who explain the situation and give her a stern warning about the dangers of leaving pets in hot cars. She is also issued a citation for animal cruelty and neglect.

The scene is harrowing and sobering, and the viewer is left with a sense of relief that the dog was rescued in time, but also a sense of outrage at the negligence of some pet owners.

The episode then shifts to another call received by the animal control unit, this time about a group of animals left in a storage unit. The caller reports hearing strange noises coming from the storage unit next door and has become concerned that something untoward is happening to the animals inside.

The ASPCA officers investigate and find a group of animals, including several rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, and birds, crammed into tiny cages in the storage unit. The animals are in bad shape, with dirty fur, overgrown nails, and no access to food or water.

The officers quickly realize that the animals have been abandoned by their owner, who had left them in the unit without any care or attention. The owner, it turns out, was a breeder who had been forced to abandon the animals when she fell on hard times.

The ASPCA officers gather up the animals and bring them back to their shelter, where they are examined by a team of veterinarians. The animals are found to have a variety of health issues, including malnutrition, dehydration, and respiratory problems.

The officers work tirelessly to help the animals recover, providing them with food, water, and medical attention. As the animals begin to heal, their personalities start to emerge, and the viewer is treated to some heartwarming scenes of the animals playing and interacting with each other.

In the end, the ASPCA officers manage to find new homes for all the animals, and they are seen being loaded onto a van and taken to loving new families. The scene is a reminder of the critical importance of the work of the ASPCA and the tireless efforts of its animal control officers.

Overall, the episode is an emotional rollercoaster, taking the viewer from the heart-stopping crisis of the dog in the car to the heartwarming scenes of the rescued animals. Through it all, the ASPCA officers remain calm, professional, and deeply dedicated to their work, providing a glimpse into the incredible complexity and compassion required of those who protect animals from abuse and neglect.
