Austin City Limits Season 5 Episode 9

Austin City Limits Season 5 Episode 9 Johnny Paycheck followed by Billy Joe Shaver

In this episode of Austin City Limits, two legendary country musicians take the stage: Johnny Paycheck and Billy Joe Shaver.

First up is Paycheck, known for his hit songs "Take This Job and Shove It" and "She's All I Got." He begins his set with "11 Months and 29 Days," a fast-paced tale of a man who's been in jail for almost a year and can't wait to get out. Paycheck's gravelly voice and gritty lyrics immediately grab the audience's attention.

Next, he slows things down with "Old Violin," a heartbreaking ballad about a man who's getting older and reflecting on his life. Paycheck's emotion is palpable as he sings, "Here's to the past, they can kiss my glass, I hope she's happy with him." The crowd responds with thunderous applause.

Paycheck also performs "Me and the IRS," a humorous song about a man who owes money to the government and can't seem to get a break. "I paid them every dime I made, they want more than what's due. They're driving me insane, they're gonna drive me out of my brain," he sings.

Next up is Billy Joe Shaver, who's often credited as one of the pioneers of the outlaw country movement. He kicks off his set with "Georgia on a Fast Train," a rollicking tune that tells the story of an ambitious young man who's leaving home to seek his fortune.

Shaver's voice is gritty and raw, perfectly suited to his lyrics. He performs "Honky Tonk Heroes," a song he wrote that was a hit for Waylon Jennings. "He's a honky tonk hero, he's a hero through and through. He'll be the first to tell you, he's not the one to refuse," he sings.

Shaver also performs "I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal," a song that's become something of a mantra for the musician. "I'm just an old chunk of coal, but I'm gonna be a diamond someday," he sings. It's a testament to his philosophy of hard work and perseverance.

Throughout the episode, both Paycheck and Shaver showcase their incredible talent and show why they're two of country music's most beloved performers. The audience can't help but sing along and tap their feet to the infectious rhythms and heartfelt lyrics.

Austin City Limits continues to be a showcase for the best in music, and this episode is no exception. Whether you're a die-hard country fan or just love great music, this episode is not to be missed.
