Aspiring manga artist Mashiro Moritaka and his writer partner Takagi Akito have come a long way with their creation, "Detective Trap." In the latest episode of Bakuman season 1, episode 22 titled "Coalition and Disagreement," we see the duo taking it up a notch and trying to form a coalition of young manga artists to get noticed by publishers.
The episode begins with Mashiro and Takagi meeting with fellow young manga artist, Fukuda Shinta. Mashiro and Takagi try to convince Fukuda to join their coalition, and after some initial reservations, he agrees.
The three of them then set out to recruit more artists who share their dream of becoming successful manga creators. As they roam around town, they stumble upon a talented artist named Hiramaru Kazuya, who has given up on his dreams of becoming a mangaka and is content with his job as an editor. After some convincing, Hiramaru agrees to join the coalition, and they move on to the next target.
Their journey leads them to a popular internet cafe where they meet with an eccentric manga artist named Aoki Yuriko. Aoki is initially hesitant to join the coalition. Still, after Mashiro and Takagi explain their vision, she decides to give it a try, marking the end of the coalition building phase.
The coalition's next order of business is to create a one-shot manga to submit to publishers and gain recognition. However, the group members have different visions for the manga and cannot agree on the story and characters. What follows is a series of disagreements and misunderstandings, revealing the underlying tensions among the group members.
"Mashiro's storytelling lacks plot and action," says Fukuda, criticizing the first draft of the manga. "This is not even a story," says Aoki, casting doubts on the manga's creative direction. Takagi tries to mollify his partners and move the project forward, but his words fall on deaf ears.
The episode ends on a cliffhanger as the coalition faces a possibility of falling apart before it even begins. That said, Mashiro, being a young and ambitious person with a lot to accomplish, will do everything in his power to keep the coalition together.
Overall, Bakuman season 1 episode 22 is a fast-paced and character-driven episode that portrays the challenges of building a team of creative minds. The episode packs in tension, humor, and insight, making it a must-watch for anime/manga enthusiasts.
