Guts, the Black Swordsman, finally reaches the city of Wyndham, adjacent to the Castle of the Holy See, where Griffith, the charismatic and manipulative leader of the mercenary group known as the Band of the Hawk, is due to be awarded with the prestigious title of the White Falcon. Hoping to find a lead on Griffith's whereabouts, Guts sneaks into the city disguised as a stable boy and makes his way to the city plaza, where the award ceremony is being held.
As the nobleman's procession enters the plaza, Guts catches a glimpse of Griffith, dressed in ornate white armor, riding a white horse and flanked by his trusted lieutenants, Casca and Judeau. Guts is struck by the grandeur of the event and the admiration that the crowd shows towards Griffith, whom they consider a hero and a savior. Meanwhile, Griffith seems distant and preoccupied, lost in his own thoughts.
The ceremony proceeds with speeches and music, culminating in the moment when the nobleman presents Griffith with the White Falcon mantle - a symbol of valor and purity - and declares him a true knight. Prompted by the applause of the crowd, Griffith delivers a gracious acceptance speech, thanking his comrades and pledging to continue fighting for the good of the realm.
However, as the nobleman invites him to sit by his side and enjoy the feast, Griffith suddenly collapses from his horse and falls unconscious on the ground. In the confusion that follows, Guts sees an opportunity to approach Griffith and confront him about his hidden agenda and his true intentions towards his companions, whom Guts suspects are being used as pawns in Griffith's quest for power.
Just as Guts is about to draw his sword, he is interrupted by the arrival of a mysterious figure, dressed in black and wielding a strange, twisted blade. The figure announces himself as Wyald, the Black Dog Knights' leader and the sworn enemy of the Band of the Hawk. Wyald challenges Griffith to a duel to the death, mocking him for his supposed cowardice and lack of lust for battle.
Griffith, still weak and disoriented, accepts the challenge, determined to demonstrate his worth as a warrior and a leader. The two antagonists engage in a fierce battle, exchanging blows and taunts, while the crowd watches in awe and horror. Guts, caught in the midst of the carnage, realizes that he has no choice but to intervene and protect his former comrades.
What follows is a brutal and bloody confrontation, as Guts, Griffith, and Wyald push each other to their limits and reveal their true natures. The episode ends with a shocking twist that will forever alter the course of the story and the lives of the characters involved.
