Big Bold Builds Season 1 Episode 8 Heritage House
- April 23, 2014
In episode 8 of season 1 of Big Bold Builds, entitled "Heritage House," host and renovation expert Danielle Bryk takes on a unique challenge as she tackles a century-old heritage home in need of some serious updates.
The episode begins with Danielle touring the home and explaining the importance of preserving a property's history while also making it functional for modern-day living. She notes that her biggest challenge with this particular home will be blending the old with the new.
As she dives into the renovation, Danielle is faced with a number of obstacles, including outdated electrical and plumbing systems, cramped and outdated bathrooms, and a kitchen that is desperately in need of an overhaul.
One of the first tasks on Danielle's plate is to address the home's heating and cooling systems. Given the home's age, it's no surprise that these systems are outdated and inefficient. Danielle brings in an HVAC expert to assess the situation and determine the best course of action. Together, they come up with a plan to install a number of ductless heating and cooling units throughout the home, providing efficient and customizable temperature control in each room.
Next up is the kitchen, which Danielle notes is "one of the ugliest I've ever seen." She sets about modernizing the space while also preserving its historical charm. To do this, Danielle opts for shaker-style cabinetry in a classic white finish, paired with a statement backsplash of handmade tile in a soft blue hue. She also installs a large island, complete with a farmhouse sink and a butcher-block countertop.
Another major part of the renovation is updating the cramped and outdated bathrooms. Danielle takes on the daunting task of converting a small storage room into a functional ensuite bathroom for the home's master bedroom. She manages to create a gorgeous and spacious bathroom, complete with a walk-in shower, freestanding bathtub, and double vanity.
Throughout the renovation, Danielle makes a point of preserving as much of the home's original features as possible, including the existing brick chimney, which she exposes and turns into a beautiful architectural feature. She also works with local artisans to create custom iron railings and other decorative elements that echo the home's historical charm.
As the renovation nears completion, Danielle reflects on the challenges and rewards of working on a heritage home. She notes that while it can be difficult to update a historic property without sacrificing its character, the end result is always worth it. The family who owns the Heritage House is thrilled with the final product, and Danielle is proud to have played a part in preserving a piece of history for future generations to enjoy.
