In Black-ish season one, episode one, we are introduced to the Johnson family, an affluent African American family living in Los Angeles. Andre (Anthony Anderson) is a successful marketing executive who, after receiving a promotion, begins to worry that his family is losing touch with their Black culture. He feels that his children are becoming too privileged and disconnected from their heritage, and he wants to find a way to reconnect them to their roots.

In the pilot episode, we see Andre's concerns start to manifest in his family and work life. We witness his struggles with his job, as he balances his new role with his desire to be a responsible and involved father. He is shown trying to balance his responsibilities at work while trying to make it home in time for his son's basketball game. His wife Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross) is also a successful doctor who has a more laid back approach to parenting and African American culture.

Throughout the episode, we see Andre's efforts to introduce his children to different aspects of Black culture, such as the tradition of giving a special handshake to other members of the Black community or cooking traditional dishes. Andre tries to push his children to embrace these cultural practices, but they are initially resistant. His eldest daughter, Zoey (Yara Shahidi), is more interested in hanging out with her friends and going to parties than taking part in her father's efforts to reconnect with their culture.

Andre's efforts finally come to a head during the Johnson family's annual Thanksgiving dinner. After learning that his children do not know the true meaning of the holiday, Andre decides to take a stand and try to bring his family together. He introduces a game called "Black Nerd," which involves questions about Black culture and history. Despite some initial hesitation, the entire family becomes engrossed in the game, and laughter and a renewed sense of connection fill the room.

Overall, Black-ish season one, episode one, is an entertaining and relatable introduction to the Johnson family and their efforts to balance their success with staying connected to their roots. The show tackles themes of race, class, and identity with humor and heart, making it a must-watch for fans of family comedies. The pilot episode sets the stage for the rest of the series, as we see the Johnson family navigate their way through the challenges of modern life while trying to hold onto their traditions and values.
