As the second season of Borgen begins, we find Birgitte Nyborg (Sidse Babett Knudsen) no longer serving as Denmark's Prime Minister. But the political world is never quiet, and soon Nyborg finds herself drawn back into the fray.

In "89,000 Children," Nyborg is approached by Mark Lund, the CEO of a major Danish corporation. Lund wants Nyborg to join his board of directors, promising a large salary and a chance to have a real effect on Denmark's economy. Nyborg is tempted, but her personal beliefs clash with those of the corporation. Meanwhile, a scandal is brewing around Lund's company, and Nyborg must decide whether to distance herself from the controversy or get involved.

Nyborg also becomes involved in a contentious issue involving Danish childcare. In Denmark, parents can receive government funding to cover the costs of childcare. But a new report has revealed that tens of thousands of children are being denied childcare due to a lack of funding. Nyborg is determined to address this issue and ensure that all Danish families have access to affordable, high-quality childcare.

The season premiere also introduces several new characters. One of these is Katrine Fønsmark (Birgitte Hjort Sørensen), a young journalist who becomes Nyborg's press secretary. Katrine is ambitious and eager to make a name for herself, but she quickly finds that working for Nyborg is more challenging than she expected.

Overall, "89,000 Children" sets the stage for another season of political intrigue and personal drama in the world of Danish politics. The episode asks questions about power, privilege, and responsibility, and challenges us to consider how we can best serve the needs of our communities.
