Alan Shore and Denny Crane team up to defend a man who is accused of kidnapping and killing his own daughter. While the two lawyers are confident in their clients' innocence, the evidence against him is damning, and the prosecution seems to have a solid case. Meanwhile, the law firm of Crane, Poole, and Schmidt is dealing with internal issues, as some of their attorneys are considering leaving to start their own practice.

The episode begins with Alan Shore arguing in front of a judge for his client, Jacob, who is charged with kidnapping and murdering his own daughter. Shore seems confident in his client's innocence, but the prosecution has evidence to suggest otherwise. In a flashback, we see Jacob arguing with his daughter and demanding that she stay home and not see her boyfriend. Later, she disappears, and her body is found days later. The prosecution argues that Jacob killed his daughter in a fit of rage and then tried to cover it up.

Back in the present, Denny Crane joins Shore in the case, and the two begin to investigate the evidence against Jacob. They discover that the prosecution's key witness, a neighbor who claims to have seen Jacob with his daughter's body, has a history of mental illness and may not be a reliable witness. Furthermore, there is DNA evidence found at the scene that doesn't match Jacob's.

As the trial continues, the tension between the lawyers at Crane, Poole, and Schmidt reaches a boiling point. Several attorneys are considering leaving the firm to start their own, and tensions between characters who were once friends boil over into a heated argument. Shirley Schmidt, the head of the firm, must intervene to keep things under control.

Back in court, Shore and Crane present their evidence, and the trial seem to be swinging in their favor. However, the prosecution has one more trick up their sleeve. They call Jacob's wife to the stand, and she reveals that he had been emotionally abusing her and their daughter for years. She also reveals that he had bought a boat and taken his daughter out on it just before she disappeared.

The final act of the episode hinges on the reveal of whether or not Jacob actually killed his daughter. The episode is well-written, with several twists and turns that keep the viewer guessing. James Spader and William Shatner have a great chemistry as the odd couple of lawyers who work together to exonerate their client.

Overall, Boston Legal season 1 episode 3, "Catch and Release," is a strong episode that balances a legal case with personal drama. The writers do an excellent job of keeping the viewer engaged with the case while also delivering tense character moments. While the show has a lot of humorous moments, this episode showcases its ability to deliver emotional drama and tension.
