Ep 5. Abbi's Mom

Abbi's Mom is the fifth episode of the fourth season of Broad City and focuses on Abbi's relationship with her mother, Joanne. Abbi and Ilana are at a restaurant discussing their upcoming birthdays and the fact that they're getting older, when Abbi's mother calls her. She tells Abbi that she wants to come to New York to visit her, but Abbi is hesitant because her mother is very controlling and always tries to force Abbi into doing things she doesn't want to do.

Despite her reservations, Abbi agrees to let her mother come and stay with her for a few days, and the rest of the episode follows their interactions. Joanne is determined to make Abbi do things like go to a museum, go shopping, and take a yoga class, all things that Abbi is not interested in. Abbi tries to stand up for herself and tell her mother that she's an adult who can make her own decisions, but Joanne is very pushy and doesn't seem to listen.

Meanwhile, Ilana is dealing with a different kind of motherly figure – her boss, Cheryl. Cheryl is very demanding and expects Ilana to work long hours and go above and beyond for her job. Ilana is struggling to find a balance between her work life and her personal life, and it becomes clear that she needs to set some boundaries with Cheryl.

As the episode progresses, Abbi and Ilana both realize that they need to stand up for themselves and assert their independence. Abbi decides to take her mother to a drag show instead of a museum, which ends up being a great time for both of them.
