Building Off the Grid is a popular television series that presents stunning and unique homes constructed by creative builders in remote locations, and season 4 episode 7 titled Island Oasis is no different. In this episode, the show features two inspiring designers, Conroy and Christina, who set out to erect an eco-friendly home on a pristine island in Belize.

Conroy and Christina are a couple who gained some experience constructing a home in British Columbia, Canada, but they seek a new challenge: to build a self-sustaining home with the help of nature on a tropical island, far away from the city buzz. To achieve this goal, the couple join forces with Arthur, a Belizean builder, and his team.

First, the team comes to the island equipped with all the necessary tools and materials, including an abundant supply of bamboo that will serve as the primary building material for the home's structural components. The team decides to use the bamboo available on the island to create the posts and beams that will hold up the home's roofing system. Not only is bamboo a versatile and durable material, but it also fits the eco-sustainable focus of the project, which aims to prevent any environmental damage to the island.

However, constructing a home from bamboo is not a simple task, and the team faces several challenges. One of the most significant obstacles is how to keep the bamboo dry and protected from the high humidity and tropical weather, which can cause it to rot. To secure the bamboo, Conroy and Christina work tirelessly to emplace an eight-foot-deep trench, where the home's poles will be sunk and treated with a mix of natural materials that will preserve the bamboo and prevent insects from getting in.

Another major obstacle that the team faces is the distance from the beach to the place where they are constructing the home. The island is luxurious and isolated, which gives them the advantage of having nobody around but, at the same time, the disadvantage of having to transport all the material from the beach to the site where they're building the house. As a result, the team must improvise transportation methods such as using a small motorboat that can carry a limited but necessary amount of material. The crew members must row a dinghy, dragging it with rope behind the motorboat, to enable safe inland transportation of materials.

Despite these challenges, Conroy and Christina are committed to building a sustainable and eco-friendly home. To maintain this commitment, they design the house with the natural environment in mind and plan to install a composting toilet with a unique filtration system. And, of course, the house will depend mostly on solar power and have an energy-efficient design that maximizes natural insulation.

The Island Oasis episode of Building off the Grid season 4 is inspirational, to say the least, for the way Conroy and Christina adapt to the challenges of creating a home that is both eco-friendly and sustainable on an island. The builders' juxtaposition between the luxurious surroundings of the island and their minimalistic and eco-centric approach to constructing a home serves as a reminder of how people can live in harmony with nature. Overall, this episode challenges viewers to reconsider their environmental impact and the way they envision home construction.
