In the season one finale of Casual, titled "Dave," the characters are faced with the culmination of their personal struggles throughout the season.
Alex, Valerie's brother, is preparing for a date with his ex-girlfriend, Sarah. As he gets dressed for the date, he reflects on his past mistakes in the relationship and his fear of repeating them. Meanwhile, Valerie is closing up her therapist's office and gets a surprise visitor: her ex-husband, Drew. The two have been drifting apart for years but Drew wants to rekindle their relationship and move back in with Valerie.
At the same time, Valerie's daughter, Laura, is struggling with her feelings for her professor, Ian. She has been having an affair with him and doesn't know how to navigate the complicated feelings involved. She seeks advice from Alex, who struggles to offer her appropriate guidance due to his own complicated relationship history.
As the night progresses, the characters' individual storylines intertwine and come to a head. Alex's date with Sarah doesn't go as planned and he is left feeling rejected and alone. Valerie and Drew's reignited romance is short-lived when Valerie realizes that she doesn't want to go back to how things were before. Laura has a confrontation with Ian, which leads to her finally accepting that the relationship is unhealthy and needs to end.
Through all of these experiences, the characters learn important lessons about themselves and their relationships. Alex realizes that he needs to let go of his past mistakes in order to move forward, Valerie recognizes that she can't keep living in the past, and Laura comes to the realization that she deserves better than a relationship with a much older man.
Overall, the season one finale of Casual is a poignant and emotional episode that ties up the season's plotlines while leaving the characters with room to grow and change in future seasons.
