At the beginning of the series, a man by the name of John Henry Hoyle is a fresh graduate from the prestigious Harvard University, in 1875. He takes the title of sheriff in a Kansas town, and from his education in school, attempts to introduce the then-emerging science of forensics to the crime scenes of the Kansas town, Great Bend. He is partnered with his reluctant Deputy Eli, who is much apprehensive to work with him at first, and remains so throughout the series, though he gains a closer relationship to John. The citizens of Great Bend, Kansas, are unyielding to John's desire to introduce forensics, unimpressed by his Harvard pedigree and scientific terms. They do, however, respect his clever wit and shooting skills, shown throughout his trials as he and Deputy Eli hunt down various criminals and riffraff, from robbers to murderers, who have plagued the town for years unchecked. Slowly, the sheriff and his deputy gain the respect they initially desired, showing their skills and qualifications in their cases in the 19th century Kansas town.
