Conan Season 2014 Episode 82 Joel McHale, Freddie Wong & Matt Arnold, Daniel Sloss
- June 26, 2014
In this episode of Conan, host Conan O'Brien welcomes four guests to the show: actor, comedian, and host of The Soup, Joel McHale, YouTube filmmakers Freddie Wong and Matt Arnold, and Scottish comedian Daniel Sloss.
The show kicks off with a monologue from Conan, touching on current events and pop culture news, as always. One joke involves the recent trend of massive ships getting stuck in the Suez Canal, with Conan quipping that he was relieved to see that the world's most famous canal wasn't "the Panama Ca-meltoe." The audience groans, but Conan plows forward undeterred.
Next up is Joel McHale, who chats with Conan about fatherhood and his latest project, a new comedy thriller series called Crime Scene Kitchen. They also discuss the more surreal moments of McHale's career, including that time he hosted the White House Correspondent's Dinner and roasted government officials to their faces. McHale also gamely participates in a bit where he reads cringey text messages between him and his teenage son, to hilarious effect.
Following McHale is a segment with internet sensations Freddie Wong and Matt Arnold, who have made a name for themselves with their wildly entertaining short films and video game parodies on their YouTube channel, RocketJump. They brought along a clip from their latest project, a musical comedy series called Dimension 404. Conan and the RocketJump guys discuss the process of bringing their content from the internet to television, and Conan marvels at their impressive visual effects skills.
Finally, Scottish comedian Daniel Sloss takes the stage for a stand-up set, in which he covers topics ranging from marriage to turning 30 to the joys (and perils) of getting high with your grandparents. Sloss's humor is biting and often dark, but the audience eats it up, applauding loudly after each punchline.
The episode ends with a segment in which Conan takes questions from the audience, including one from a woman who asks if he has any tips for navigating social situations post-COVID. Conan recommends just asking people what they're comfortable with and following their lead, before signing off with his customary "Goodnight everybody!"
