Coogan's Run was a comedy series that aired on BBC Two between 1995 and 1997, starring Steve Coogan in the lead role. The show consisted of six self-contained episodes, with each episode featuring a different character played by Coogan, all of whom were linked by the fact that they were all naïve and somewhat hapless, which allowed Coogan to showcase his range as a comedian and actor.

The central premise of the show was that each episode followed a different character through a day in their life. Some of the characters included a layabout called Gareth Cheeseman, a nightclub bouncer named Paul Calf, and Saxondale, a pest controller who was obsessed with rock music.

Despite the fact that each episode featured a different character, there were a number of recurring elements that linked the episodes together. For example, some of the characters from one episode would make a cameo appearance in another episode, and some of the jokes and plot points from earlier episodes were referenced throughout the series.

One of the most notable aspects of Coogan's Run was the way in which it showcased Steve Coogan's versatility as an actor and comedian. Each character he played was distinct and fully-realised, with their own unique mannerisms, quirks, and verbal tics. Coogan was able to effortlessly switch between different accents, personas, and comedic styles, and the show allowed viewers to see the full range of his talents.

Another notable aspect of the show was the way in which it parodied various aspects of British culture and society. The different characters represented various archetypes and stereotypes, such as the lazy benefit scrounger, the aggressive football hooligan, and the deluded rock star wannabe. By exaggerating and ridiculing these types, the show offered a sharp and satirical commentary on contemporary Britain.

The show was also notable for its supporting cast, which included a number of up-and-coming British actors and comedians. This included performers such as John Thomson, who played a number of different roles throughout the series, as well as Malcolm Raeburn, who played the recurring character of Arthur Atkinson, a washed-up old actor who specialised in corny catchphrases.

Overall, Coogan's Run was a groundbreaking and highly influential show that showcased Steve Coogan's talents as a comedian and actor, while also providing a sharp and satirical commentary on British society. Its mix of wit, satire, and absurdity ensured its enduring popularity with audiences, and it remains a classic of 1990s British comedy.
