Rebecca Bunch (played by Rachel Bloom) is an accomplished lawyer in New York City, but she's not entirely fulfilled. One day, as fate would have it, she runs into Josh Chan (Vincent Rodriguez III), an old summer camp crush from her teenage years. On a whim, she decides to uproot her life and move to West Covina, California to try and win him back.
In the sixth episode of the first season, Rebecca celebrates her first Thanksgiving in California with new friends and old. Her roommate, Paula (Donna Lynne Champlin), is eager to help Rebecca impress Josh's family, while Josh's girlfriend, Valencia (Gabrielle Ruiz), is less than thrilled about Rebecca's presence.
As Rebecca preps for the big day, she realizes that she doesn't know much about Josh's family or their Thanksgiving traditions. She tries to get to know them, but her attempts to ingratiate herself come off as awkward and desperate. Meanwhile, Valencia's passive-aggressive comments about Rebecca's diet and appearance put her on edge.
When the day of the feast arrives, things don't go exactly as planned. Paula's meddling causes tension between Rebecca and Josh, and Valencia's jealousy boils over. Then, of course, there's the food. Rebecca, who has never cooked a turkey before, accidentally unleashes a wave of gastrointestinal distress on the family.
Despite the chaos, the group manages to salvage the day with a communal rendition of "Jingle Bells" and some heartfelt moments. Rebecca realizes that she doesn't need to impress anyone to be happy, and Josh's family accepts her for who she is.
Overall, "My First Thanksgiving With Josh!" is a hilarious and heartwarming episode that captures the spirit of the holiday season. The performances are top-notch, especially from Bloom and Champlin, and the writing is sharp and insightful. It's no wonder that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has become a cult classic beloved by fans and critics alike.
