Kate Wallis is the queen bee of the school and most popular girl in town. Everyone knows her and everyone wants to be her. That is until one day she is kidnapped and held captive by a deranged man. When she finally returns home, everything has changed. Her family is falling apart and her friends don't seem to want anything to do with her anymore.
In episode 4 of Cruel Summer, titled "You Don't Hunt, You Don't Eat," tensions between Jeanette and Kate continue to rise as a new piece of evidence comes to light. A smear campaign is started against Jeanette, which causes her to feel isolated and alone. Meanwhile, Kate is slowly but surely putting the pieces of her life back together, but her newfound closeness with Martin Harris isn't sitting well with her family or her friends.
The episode opens with Jeanette being ambushed by a group of girls who have all been influenced by the smear campaign against her. They taunt her and call her names, with one girl even pushing her down. Jeanette is left lying on the ground, feeling alone and defeated.
Meanwhile, Kate is at home with her mother, trying to bake a cake for her family. Her mother senses that something is bothering her and questions her about it. Kate reveals that she has been spending time with Martin, much to her mother's chagrin. Her mother reminds her that Martin is old enough to be her father and that she shouldn't be spending time with him.
Kate brushes off her mother's concerns and tells her that she can't dictate who she spends time with. Her mother warns her to be careful, but Kate ignores her and continues on with her day.
Later on, Jeanette's mother tries to console her daughter and tells her that the rumors will blow over soon enough. Jeanette is inconsolable, however, and tells her mother that she can't take it anymore. Her mother reassures her that she is loved and that everything will be okay.
Meanwhile, Kate is out on a date with Martin. They go hunting and Kate proves to be a natural shot. Martin is impressed with her skills and takes her out to dinner to celebrate.
At dinner, Martin tells Kate that he's been watching her from afar for a long time. He tells her how beautiful she is and how special she is to him. Kate is flattered by his attention, but something about their interaction doesn't sit well with her.
The next day, Jeanette's friends try to reach out to her, but she pushes them away. She continues to feel isolated and alone, with nobody to turn to for support.
Meanwhile, Kate is starting to notice that something is not quite right with Martin. He seems to be possessive and controlling, and she's starting to feel uncomfortable around him. She tries to break things off with him, but he refuses to let her go.
The episode ends with Jeanette receiving a package in the mail. Inside the package is a t-shirt with the words "You Don't Hunt, You Don't Eat" printed on it. She realizes that it's the same t-shirt that Kate was wearing on the day she was kidnapped, and she starts to wonder if Kate had something to do with her abduction.
Overall, "You Don't Hunt, You Don't Eat" is a tense and suspenseful episode that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. The show continues to explore the complexities of teenage relationships and the impact of trauma on the lives of its characters. With only a few episodes left in the season, the tension is building and the stakes are higher than ever before.
